The Piper Tri Pacer Goes NASCAR

On January 29 Phil Hoy (SWPC member and Piper Aviation Museum member) met with NASCAR driver Joey Logano in Wallingford, Connecticut at a fundraiser event at the Silver City Raceway. Joey drives the number 20 car for Joe Gibbs Racing Team. Phil presented Joey with a signed November-December issue of the Short Wings Piper News magazine (Phil says that his signature and 2 bucks might get you a cup of coffee somewhere). This is the issue that has Phil’s Tri Pacer, N9243D, on the front cover, which will be donated to Piper Aviation Museum this year. Joey autographed a quarter panel from the number 20 car that was involved in a major crash at the Brickyard/Indy on July 31, 2011. Wreckage from these pile-ups is usually assigned a serial number, with the date of the wreck and various signatures from NASCAR to affirm the wreckage authenticity. The wreckage from these pile-ups is considered to be pretty valuable by their racing fans.

My wife (Sharon) and I have been Joey Logano fans for 3 or 4 years now. Joey and his family lived in Portland/Middletown, Connecticut through his pre-teenage and teenage years and helps the Town of Portland raise private funds and donations for its Fourth of July Celebrations. This is just one of the many charity events Joey, his family and others of his racing team contribute to. I’m sure Joey would appreciate a fan base of all of those of us who are in involved in the aviation community. We wish Joey all the success in the coming year in his NASCAR endeavors.
